JOB TITLE:  Data Engineering Manager 

SALARY: £70,929 - £74,869  

LOCATION(S): Edinburgh 

HOURS:  Full time  

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at one of our office sites.

As part of our Edinburgh based team, you will play a key part of an established Data Engineering team within the Waterfront Platform evolving our Insurance, Pension and Investment Digital Channels. This is an excellent opportunity for a driven candidate who is passionate and experienced in designing and delivering modern data solutions. 

Day to day, you’ll be: 

  • Collaborating with other engineering, product and business colleagues to implement data led product features to digitally modernise customer journeys.

  • Building streaming data applications using industry leading toolsets that allow us to deliver data and analytics in near real time to customers and colleagues.

  • Developing modern cloud hosted data stores that allow us to move away from legacy systems and benefit from the scalability and accessibility it offers. 

  • Implementing pipelines that allow us to move, transform and visualise data seamlessly. 

  • Managing and governing the data we own to maintain high quality, reliable and consumable data products.

What you’ll need 

  • Proven experience of modern engineering practises like automated testing, test driven development and continuous integration for data pipelines using related tools.

  • A “can-do” attitude with the ability to collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary, internal, and external distributed teams across the initiative lifecycle.

  • Knack of identifying new technologies, tools and approaches to help continually improve standards and quality. 

  • Confidence to express their own opinions and be pragmatic about modifying them when appropriate.

  • Coding/scripting knowledge developed in relevant industry setting (Java, Python, SQL).

  • Strong skills in cloud IAM, networking, resource provisioning and infrastructure as code. 

  • Display a DevOps mindset and ability to use tools like Jenkins, Maven, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform. 

  • Firm grasp of implementing data pipelines using Kafka, Pub/Sub, Dataflow and/or Dataproc technologies.  

  • Extensive experience of operational data stores and data warehouses, and working with relational databases to build GCP based data solutions using CloudSQL, Spanner and/or BigQuery. 

  • Well developed ability to design data systems for reliability, scalability and availability.  

  • An ability to see the inherent value in data and the skills to story tell and visualise it through appropriate tools like Tableau and PowerBI.
